We have had a huge number of requests to explain internet phone technology and how you use the internet to make cheap or free long distance calls. This is called Voice over IP technology, VOIP, broadband phone or PC to phone technology. Internet phone technology can significantly reduce your long distance phone bills as the data is transmitted in digital format predominantly using the internet infrastructure and bypasses all sorts of intermediaries which would be used by a conventional long distance phone call. This technology not only cuts the middle men out but it is generally faster and more efficient than the old analogue technologies.
There are basically four technologies in use:-
- Broadband phones- This uses proprietory equipment and software to convert your regular phone into a broadband phone. The equipment compresses audio signals into a digital format which are then transmitted along the internet with incredible speed and clarity rather than over the conventional telephone wires. A high speed broadband internet via Cable, Satellite or DSL is required. This is potent technology which will reduce your telephone costs significantly. Broadband phones work anywhere in the world provided you have a high speed internet connection!
- Software based.- This uses proprietory software to compress audio signals into a digital format. The signal is then transmitted from your PC to its destination via the internet.
- PC Card based.- Also uses proprietory software and a card which you plug into your PC to enhance the signal and remove echo.
- Interface based.- Does not require a PC and is a standalone "box" like an answering machine. This is connected directly to the internet and uses it to make calls or send faxes.
